Chapter 15. Army Corps of Engineers

Overview

The Army Corps of Engineers provides civil and military engineering services to the nation, including:

"The mission of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the world's preeminent public engineering agency, is to provide quality, responsive engineering services to the Nation and its armed forces. The Corps plans, designs, builds and operates water resources projects; designs and manages military facilities construction for the Army and Air Force at home and abroad; provides design and construction management support for other Defense and federal agencies; cleans hazardous areas across the Nation through the Formerly Used Defense Sites program and the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program; and conducts state of the art engineering research and design at its Engineer Research and Development Center."

The Corps of Engineers supports research and development activities through its Engineering Research and Development Center which has 7 subordinate laboratories:

Environmental Laboratory
Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory
Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory
Construction Engineering Research Laboratory
Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory
Information Technology Laboratory
Topographic Engineering Center

All support some environmental R&D, but the first two labs account for most environmental activities. Table 11-1 shows the Corp of Engineers R&D changes from FY2000 to FY2010.
