Summary: This is the first guidebook on no-take marine reserves – areas of the sea where all consumptive use of natural resources is prohibited. Authors Jack Sobel and Craig Dahlgren provide a synthesis of information on the underlying science of no-take marine reserves, as well as design and implementation issues. The book describes the need for the reserves and their potential benefits, examines how reserves can be designed to achieve specific objectives, and considers gaps in our knowledge and the research needed to address those gaps.

Speth, J.G. 2004. Red Sky at Morning. Yale University Press, New Haven, CT
Summary: Speth first brings together the latest data to show in detail the depth of the crisis and the disaster that will result from staying the current course. He shows how population growth, climate change, technology, economic globalization, destruction of habitat, and many other factors are working together to push us toward appalling environmental deterioration. Speth also reminds us that increasingly scarce water, food, land, and energy resources are likely to bring not just ill health and poverty, but also chaos, large-scale economic instability, and conflict. With calm and balance, Speth then explains why our current methods of tackling the crisis -- endless international negotiations and treaties -- have failed and will continue to fail. Red Sky at Morning provides a disturbing wake-up call for those who believe that the high-profile, international goverments, often led by the U.S., have created the illusion of progress on global environmental threats while leaving a mostly toothless legacy of treaties. He makes clear the specific implications of allowing the failure of global environmental governance to continue and lays out an ambitious plan for breaking the stalemate and making real progress.

NWF's Campus Ecology Program
The National Wildlife Federation's campus ecology program works to "transform the nation's college campuses into living models of an ecologically sustainable society, and train a new generation of environmental leaders."
Planetary University
A online resource for exploring the way that decision on campus sustainability get made at universities.
Planet U: Sustaining the World, Reinventing the University
Planet U places the university at the forefront of the sustainability movement. Questioning the university's ability to equip society to deal with today's serious challenges such as economic growth, democratic citizenship and planetary survival, it calls for a new social movement to take a lead in reforming the university - the world's largest industry.
The book reviews the university's 900-year history from medieval religious philosopher, to Renaissance nation-builder, to its modern function as training groups for the world's managerial class and the world's largest industry. It examines diverse campus initiatives across North America and Europe and their traditional concerns of green buildings, renewable energy and transportation demand management. But is also demonstrates the promise for social and ecological progress open to the "planetary university" once the university takes its place seriously and discovers its new mission: to create diverse models of local and global innovation centered around tough new questions about what universities - and their societies can achieve:
-how might the university help move us to a post-automobile, energy-saving society?
-how might universities help refashion the city to be sustainable?
-how might universities be governed for sustainability?
