Decision
Support Systems (DSS) are computer-based tools which can
assist land managers and other stakeholders simulate, evaluate,
and/or optimize management alternatives.
In
the first phase (2002-2004) of this project we compiled
an inventory of over 100 available DSS, and compared the
~30 most applicable to forest biodiversity issues to a set
of decision-making needs identified by a panel of forest
biodiversity experts.
In
the second phase of the project (2005-2007), we compiled
a number of case studies on how DSS have been applied in
particular situations. We then wrote a guidebook which explores
the context of forest biodiversity decision making and discusses
when and how DSS might be useful (and when they might not).
Please
use the links to the right to review our database of individual
system descriptions (inventory), overall assessment of current
capabilities and future needs (synthesis), and guide to
applying DSS to forest biodiversity decisions (guide).
