NCSE Receives Grant from The UPS Foundation for Green Jobs
October 5, 2009
Washington, DC - The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) recently received a $90,000 grant from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. The grant supports the Campus to Careers Program in providing paid internships for college students or recent graduates at clean energy businesses and non-profit organizations working on the environment and sustainability.
The Campus to Careers Program supports young professionals in their first steps towards professional careers in the environment. It exposes students to real world work experiences and works closely with employers in the rapidly growing green sector to train and mentor the future workforce. Launched in 2008, the pilot program proved a success providing 40 internships in summer 2009. It is expected to expand and provide over 150 internships by 2010.
Through the UPS grant, interns will have the opportunity to undertake field or policy work, lab research and public outreach related to clean energy technologies, environmental services or sustainability at businesses, research institutions and non-profit organizations across the country. Interns will also receive mentoring and guidance to ensure they have a positive, educational work experience.
The grant also supports NCSE’s 10th National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment: The New Green Economy, which will be held January 20-22, 2010. The conference will provide a forum to develop an agenda on aligning science, education and markets to advance economic prosperity and environmental sustainability. Over 1,500 thought leaders and practitioners from scientific, academic, government, business and environmental communities are expected to attend.
Based in Atlanta, GA, The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support of this strategic approach, the foundation has selected the following areas for giving: non-profit effectiveness, economic and global literacy, encouraging diversity, community safety and environmental sustainability, through which NCSE received its grant. In 2008, The UPS Foundation distributed $46.9 million worldwide through grants.
The Campus to Careers Program hopes to launch its next round of internships in January 2009. If interested in hosting an intern or applying for an internship, please contact:
